26/08/14 - Souths Ladies make it through to the Championship final.

Souths                     4-7

John Mitchels        3-7

Souths Ladies made it through the Championship final after a pulsating semi final against John Mitchels in Willawong last Tuesday night. Trailing by six points at half time, Souths produced a gutsy display in the second half to hold John Mitchels scoreless and finally grab the lead with a goal two minutes from time. It was the least the ladies deserved after a brilliant half of football.

Every single player contributed to the victory and they can go into the final this weekend, knowing they are well and truly battle hardened for the game. Driven on consistantly by Claire Peters and Grainne Heduan in midfield, there were standout performances throughout, from Emma Fitzgerarld and Nicky Newman in the fullback line, Katie Fitzgerarld

and Louise Nolan in the half back line, through to a visibly injured Dervla Murphy at full forward.

Souths were spared a replay when, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, John Mitchels blasted a 14 yard free against the junction of post and bar, howver this would have been a very cruel end to the game for Souths given the effort shown in the second half. All in all a brilliant victory and hopefully one that will spur them on this Sunday to a Championship medal.

13/04/14 - Brisbane Souths maintain good form

Souths      3-4

Harps        1-8

Goals win games and this proved the case at Gaelic Park in Willawong on Sunday as reigning Carpenter Cup Champions Brisbane Souths recorded a two point win over Brisbane Harps.

Harps started the game brightly with unanswered points before a Colin Farrelly free opened Souths account for the day. Poor distribution in the wet and slippy conditions let Souths down in the first half before a well worked move from defence from Harps resulted in a goal to leave the score 1-7 to 0-2 at the break.

Derek Cullens men came out all guns blazing after the interval and with the aid of strong defensive performances held Harps to a solitary point in the second half.

A strong performance from midfield duo Phil Ward and Paul O’Leary resulted in Souths bossing the exchanges in the second half. Clonakilty man Cillian Fitzpatrick proved a handful for the Harps defence as he knocked in two unanswered goals. A Shane McKenna penalty minutes later levelled the game at 3-2 to 1-8 before Wexford native O’Leary added two superb long range points to finish the game off in style.

Now with two wins in a row Souths move forward to the Capenter Cup semi final with renewed confidence as they seek to retain the Cup they won 12 months ago.
