Melbourne 7-A-Side Competition.

As a team bonding weekend, we decided to enter our mens team into the 7-a-side tournament in Melbourne. It was hosted by the Padraig Pearse's GAC club on the 22nd February. The weekend was based on team bonding more so than the football. We got Fiddlers Green Irish Bar in Surfers Paradise on board, who are one of the clubs main sponsors and they kindly provided us with polo tops and sleeveless jerseys for the trip. In total 15 players and supporters made the trip down for the weekend. There was a mixture of lads, from new members to veterans of the club of 10 years or more. It was a great way to welcome the new players to the club and improve team camaraderie for the coming season.

As this was a pre-season trip and the lads had only trained a handful of times together prior to the weekend, we knew our football wouldn’t be up to speed, to which we found out very quickly in the first match, and it was reiterated in the second (enough said!). But as far as off the field shenanigans goes, you couldn’t have planned a better weekend, with plenty of alcohol consumed in many establishments, with The Snug deserving a special mention. They look after us every year with great food, plenty of the black stuff and all the craic you could ask for from an Irish pub. We had plenty of sing songs, Phil Ward had the Quiet Man hopping with his guitar talents and excellent selection of songs on Sunday.

Plenty of stories were told and written, nick-names formed (some for good and not so good reasons).  "Farrelly dyes his beard, dyes his beard, Farrelly dyes his beard, nah nah nah nanah na nah nah nah nah" was heard on numerous occasions over the weekend and became our team tune. I think the whole of Gaelic Park was singing it at one stage. All in all it was a great weekend, everyone had a ball and strong bonds were made amongst the players. It was a great way for the lads to get together and gel as a group before the hard slog of the season begins.

Souths 2015 AGM.

The South's AGM for 2015 took place on Saturday the 7th of February, at the Irish Australian Support Association Centre. We would like to thank all those who attended, especially those who were happy to volunteer to help run Souths this year. With the committee that has been put in place, we are all hopefull that it will be a great year.
